- Friday and Saturday, January 28-29 - Western Lily work days:
habitat restoration at Table Bluff, Humboldt County.
The US Fish and Wildlife Service is coordinating two volunteer workdays on
Friday january 28 and Saturday January 29, to restore endangered western
lily habitat on Table Bluff. The endangered western lily (Lilium
occidentale) is known from less than 30 sites along the coast between Coos
Bay, Oregon and Table Bluff, California. A primary cause of its decline
over the past 100 years is the conversion of its habitat to shrubland and
forest. A total of four populations, and one of the largest populations
rangewide remain on Table Bluff. Volunteers will plant lily bulbs and
manually clear habitat, necessary until controlled grazing can be
implemented as a long term tool to maintain the habitat.
Volunteers should come prepared for wet weather, and bring lunch and water,
gloves, and any brush-clearing implements (loppers, machete, brushwhacker,
rake). Attendees will be registered as volunteers for the Fish and
Wildlife Service for the day. Meet at the south end of the Bayshore Mall
parking lot in Eureka at 9am. Volunteers may work until noon, or the

of Prairie Creek State Park," led by Sunny Bennet. Join local botanist Sunny
Bennett on an excursion to view the diminutive yet fascinating world of moss and

- Wednesday, February 9, 8pm - at the monthly meeting:
"PALCO's Botanical Research" - by Maralyn Renner, Senior Botanist.
Since 1999, PALCO has conducted comprehensive rare plant surveys on
specific projects, mostly timber harvest units. These surveys have resulted
in a substantial increase in the knowledge of the occurrence and spatial
extent of special interest species and rare plants on their lands. While
they have come to understand the habitats where they expect to find certain
species, little is known about their response to disturbance, natural or
anthropogenic. Senior PALCO Botanist, Maralyn Renner, will report on the
preliminary results of research on the response of Humboldt milk-vetch
(Astragalus agnicidus) to disturbance from activities associated with
reforestation, and describe the project to examine the response of coast
fawn lily (Erythronium revolutum) to different levels of protection from
harvest activities. In addition, she will describe other experiments being
planned for implementation in 2005 on maple-leaved checkerbloom (Sidalcea
malachroides).

Dare the February
weather. Come hike through wet pastures, salt marsh, freshwater marsh,
sand dunes, and ocean beach at the end of Table Bluff at the south end
of Humboldt Bay. The plan is to start at Ocean Ranch of the Eel River
Wildlife Area and end at Table Bluff county Park, where we will have
shuttled a vehicle. Map distance is less than 2 miles. Bring lunch and
dress for the weather, including wet feet. Meet at Pacific Union School
(3001 Janes Rd., Arcata) at 8:30 a.m., at the MacDonald's end of
Bayshore Mall parking lot at 9:00 a.m., or at the Ocean Ranch parking

"The Life, Adventures and Botanical Discoveries of David Douglas"
Geoff Teall, retired educator and local fruit preserve and sauce maker, will
share his knowledge of the renowned 19th century Scottish-born botanist,
David Douglas (1799-1834) for whom the Douglas-fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii,
or P. douglasii) and the primrose genus Douglasia are named.
In fact, there
are more plants named for David Douglas than for any other person in the
history of scientific nomenclature. His collecting adventures took him
12,000 miles on foot, horseback and canoe, including the rugged west coast
of California and Oregon. The program will feature stories from Douglas'
travel journals and will highlight some of the botanical discoveries of this
important pioneering botanist.

see a variety of willows, hopefully blooming, guided by enthusiastic

place yet to be determined. Bring lunch and dress for the weather,
including cooler temperatures inland and higher elevation. Waterproof

- Saturday, April 2 Burnt Ranch And Gray's Falls Day Trip.
Last May at these two campgrounds along the Trinity River we saw beds of
fawn lily (Erythronium) all finished blooming. This year let's try
to see them in full flower. There will be other early spring fun as well.
Each site has a trail down to the river in the gorge. We will walk these,
but you can see plenty around the campgrounds without that extra effort.

- Sunday April 10 Tolowa Dunes Walk And Day Trip -
See the wild and
beautiful sand dunes near Crescent City in their spring colors.
Laura Julian and other dune enthusiasts will introduce this dynamic
ecosystem and the special plants adapted to it, including the rare,
silvery Phacelia argentea. For Phase I meet at 10 a.m. at the Lake
Earl Wildlife Area Headquarters, 2591 Old Mill Rd., to walk a 2-3
hour circuit through the dunes, stopping for snack or lunch. If the
mosquitoes are bad in the forest, we will walk fast through there.
Optional Phase II will start back at the cars, driving to a different
part of the park for further exploration into the afternoon. Dress
for the weather, especially wind; bring water and lunch or snack.

This small property contains a
greater variety of species than what you can see at trailside
in most public preserves. From Eureka, take 101 south past
Fortuna to a left turn at Drake Hill Road, and drive to the top of the plateau.
Turn right at Rohnerville Road, and proceed 1.7 miles to
Puddin Lane, which is on the left at the bottom of a prominent gulch.
From there follow signs to Shapeero. The ground may be damp, so bring boots

Smith Redwoods State Park and the Smith
River National Recreation Area. The first walk will
be at the Stout Grove Trail to view blooming rhodies, a beautiful grove of
vine maples, and old growth redwoods, among other botanical delights. For
the second walk, we'll visit the famed Darlingtonias (California pitcher
plants). Bring water, a lunch, sturdy footwear. Camera and pocket
magnifier optional. Humboldt County participants can carpool by meeting
at Pacific Union School at 8am. Or, meet at the visitor's center inside
the Jed. Smith campground at 10am. If you only want to join the second

- Saturday-Sunday, June 11-12 - Red Mountain Day Trip or Overnight
(two-flowered pea) - Explore the 40 acres that members of our chapter
bought to save the two-flowered pea (Lathyrus biflorus), an extremely
rare species. It should be blooming then, along with other fun
mountain plants. The property is three hours from Arcata, on Red
Mountain south of Dinsmore (Rte 36), north of Black Lassic. Two
locked gates and some very rough road require 4WD vehicles and
coordination of arrivals and departures. We plan to camp the night
(zero facilities) but can probably arrange a day trip option. Please

On this return to the high mountain area we loved last summer we will join Klamath National Forest botanist Marla Knight and maybe other members of the Shasta Chapter to work on the plant list for the interpretive project at Kangaroo Lake Botanical Area. On Sat., 9:00 a.m., we'll meet at the day-use parking lot at Kangaroo Lake to walk along the lake, up through Darlingtonia fen, up to the ridge, where the Pacific Crest Trail is, about a mile from the start. The climb is gradual, with plenty of level area to explore. Expect gentianella, bog asphodel, and other wonderful bog plants to be blooming. We will camp Friday and Saturday at either Scott Mt. or Kangaroo Lake. Scott Mt. is 3 hrs from Arcata on Rte 3, north of Weaverville. Kangaroo Lake is about 45 min. farther north. When much of the world is baked dry, things are still blooming at this high meadow in the mountains north of the Trinity River between Willow Creek and Salyer. Goldenrod, coneflower, paintbrush, bog-orchid, rattlesnake orchid, leafy lousewort, sugarscoop, monkshood, two or three yampahs, and a variety of grasses are all likely. A fence to exclude cattle was completed last year, so we'll see how it's working. The campground has vault toilets; the creek has water. "A Visual Travelogue of Carnivorous Plants. Worldwide distribution and diversity, including
those species native to California." "Robert Ziermer is a watershed hydrology consultant
and adjunct professor in the HSU Geology Department. He has grown carnivorous plants for
about 50 years and still has the same Venus Flytraps that he bought in Berkeley in 1955.
Robert created and maintains the Carnivorous Plant Photo Finder that contains over 35,000
Internet links to images of almost every carnivorous plant species and variety in the world.
His presentation
will describe the taxonomic classification and distribution of the
carnivorous plants with photos of their spectacular diversity."

Join BLM ecologist Greg Jennings for a 3-4 mile hike through part of this
famous forest to see ongoing restoration work: a road
decommissioning project, a stand of second growth that's been thinned
for more rapid succession, and, of course, some genuine old growth
redwood. The trail is steep and rugged in some places. Meet at 8:30

- Saturday, October 29 - Dayhike, South Fork Trail.
Join a hike organized by the
California Wilderness Coalition along the South Fork Trinity River
(west of Willow Creek) to familiarize us with the Underwood Proposed
Wilderness. The spring flowers that usually bring us to this great
trail won't be there, but the trees and shrubs will be, and who knows
what else. The trail is well graded, 4 miles each way if you go to
the river, but you don't have to go all the way. Bring lunch and
water; dress for the weather. Meet at 8:00 a.m.at the Northcoast
Environmental Center (575 H St., Arcata) We'll return before dinner.

Native Plant Picture Potluck. Bring snacks, slides, photos, and digital pictures of
