Itinerary for Mendocino Field Trip Memorial Day extended weekend Friday, 28 May-Monday, May 31, 2010 prepared by Wilma Follette Fri., May 28: Vann Damme State Park. Meet 9:00 a.m. at the beach parking area across from the park entrance to carpool up to the Pygmy Forest. (Just south of the Little River Inn take the first left/east--Little River/Airport Rd.--for 2.5 miles to left turn into the Pygmy Forest parking area.) Back down to the campground for lunch and the trail around the bog. Then a walk a ways up the Fern Canyon trail. Sat., May 29: Mendocino Headlands State Park and follette cabin and Mendocino Coast Botanical Garden. Meet 9:30 a.m. at the restrooms near the northeast end of Heeser Dr. (From 101 take the north entrance to Mendocino--Lansing St.--and the first right--Heeser Dr.) Local Sue Smith and Wilma Follette will lead us. Then tour Follette's restoration project and lunch on the bluff (From 101, north of Jug Handle Reserve turn left/west on Boise Lane, left on Ocean Dr., right on Pacific Way to 33389--park back inside second gate on your left.) Sun., May 30. Glass Beach and McKerricher State Park. Meet 9:30 a.m. at the west end of Elm St. (--left/west at the last stop light at the north end of Fort Bragg) for a flowery coastal prairie. Sue and Wilma will lead us. Lunch at McKerricher State Park (--on 101 three miles north of Fort Bragg.) Meet at Cleone Lake parking area. Botanizing in the dunes and headland walk on boardwalk to seal and bird watching station. Mon., May 31: Jug Handle Reserve and Russian Gulch State Park. Meet 9:30 a.m.m at the parking area for Jug Handle (__on the west side of 101, one mile north of Caspar). Headlands and beach, and then upper pygmy forest (--from Gibney Lane on east side of 101). Go .9 mile to "llama crossing" sign and trailhead on right with roadside parking. Lunch at Russian Gulch State Park, three miles south, on the west side of 101. Take first right/west turn inside the Park to the picnic area. We'll walk the short headlands tail to the Blow Hole Overlook and hike their Fern Canyon Trail--to the waterfall for the ambitious.
