Chilean aster (Aster chilensis)

Plant Profile

This robust plant thrives in moist soil near the coast from southern California up to northern Oregon. It grow from 2 to 3.5 feet in height and spreads by underground roots. Blooming in late summer through fall, the luminous lavender petals brighten the autumnal landscape. While this aster is too invasive to be used in rich gardening soil, it is a wonderful addition to areas that are more "wild". The species name, chilensis, was given to this plant because the first specimen described was thought to come from Chile. However, since the specimen actually came from California, this plant is not an exotic but rather a true California native
