=========================================================== OHV's are Damaging Rare Plants in Tolowa Dunes State Park Your letters are needed now. Tolowa Dunes is a recently designated 4000-acre state park in Del Norte County that prohibits OHV riding on trails or in the dunes. But due to lack of enforcement rangers, the dunes have become a mecca for outlaw OHV riding, and the beachfront is a raceway for ATV's and quads. Unfortunately, local and regional OHV proponents are campaigning to create an OHV riding area in the dunes. The increased illegal OHV activity in Tolowa Dunes State Park is causing extensive damage to rare plants and fragile dune plant communities. At least a dozen CNPS listed species are being impacted. Of primary concern is the silvery phacelia (Phacelia argentea), found only at Tolowa Dunes (CNPS List 1B), and across the border in Oregon (state listed Threatened). Letters and e-mails to the Director of California State Parks are needed from now until the end of January asking that all means be taken to stop the illegal OHV activity occurring throughout the dunes, wetlands, and beach.
